INVITATION FIRST LABOR COMMITTEE MEETING JULY 20, 11AM

INVITATION FIRST LABOR COMMITTEE MEETING JULY 20, 11 AM  Montford Point activity center 13721 Joy Rd. Detroit, M. 48228

Dear Union President Local 999,

INVITATION TO JOIN MONTFORD POINT DETACHMENT #158 MCL LABOR COMMITTEE AND PREPARATIONS FOR UNITED STATES MARINE CORP MURAL DEDICATION ON JOY ROAD ON SEPT 9TH,

As Marine Week is coming to Detroit September 6-10, 2016, Montford Point Detachment #158 MCL is proud to announce that we are establishing a labor committee to strengthen our relationship with organized labor in the region, to invite you to participate in Marine Week activities and to ask for support for our August 5, 2017, fundraising breakfast.

Detachment #158 is  Chartered by the State of Michigan since 1956 and the only black Marine Corps League member that holds this distinction in the city of Detroit.

Founded by the Marines of Montford Point and Marines from the city of Detroit in 1956.   We are honored to have three original Black Marines that served during WWII.

The leadership and members of our MCL Detachment’s have deep ties to labor.   In the past, I was a member of UAW 140 and Teamsters 337 and retired from APWU 480.    Our Chaplain Janice McClellan is an AFSCME 3317 retiree.  Marine Albert Washington was a member of Teamsters 247 and USW 1358.   Our PR representative Suzanne Force is UAW 6000.  Most of our members have strong union ties.

We are hoping you will consider sponsoring our August 5, 2017, “Community Breakfast” fundraiser to help prepare our building and grounds for a Mural Dedication by the United States Marines on September 9th, 2017.     We are looking to raise $40,000 for material and labor to make needed repairs before painting begins August 31, 2017.

Detachment #158 is located on Detroit’s west side, Council District 7.     District 7 Councilman Gabe Leland is co-chairing the August 5th breakfast and we are hopeful you partner with us on this important effort.

In addition to preparing for the historic mural dedication to the United States Marines on Sept. 9th, 2017,  It’s our hope we can establish a long-term community partnership with your union.  We hope your union can assign a member, staff member or retiree to serve on our Detachment’s labor committee and connect us with your Veteran’s Department or committee.

The first official Labor Committee meeting will be held Thursday, July 20th at 11 am at 13721 Joy Rd.   Please let me know if you can attend or send a representative.

For more information, please contact  Ervin Love, Vice-Commandant at 248-9487847 or email  Bronzstar@sbcglobal.net
